THEY had barely reached the street when a horn blared and Molly pulled up in her yellow Volkswagen. Someone had put black antennae on the roof, making it look like a jaundiced bedbug.

"Oh, no," Teagan said.

"What is it?" Finn asked.

"The Birthday Bug. Molly's mom is very big on birthdays. They decorate everything. Including people. If you think the outside is bad, wait until you see what's inside."

Molly was wearing wraparound shades with yellow frames, and bug antennae, too. A brunette who looked too young to be in high school was sitting in the passenger seat. The brunette rolled down the window and bobbed her head to make her own pink antennae jiggle and the LEDs around the rose-colored rim of her shades flash.

"Whose birthday is it?" Teagan asked

"My birthday," the girl said, in a very cute French accent.

"This bug looks contagious," Finn said.

"Oui. Would you like to catch some?" She flashed the LEDs at him.
